HELP? Differences in DX7 synths.

Unread postby marcmatthews » Mon Mar 26, 2012 5:18 pm

Hello;
Does anyone here have any info whatsoever on what the difference is between the DX7 11 FD and the DX7 11 Plus? I can find info everywhere on the Dx7s and Dx711 and Dx7fD11 series..but not a single thing on the "PLUS' edition.

Is it just not a popular machine like the others?

Thanks to anyone who can help me understand.

Regards;
Marc

Hi Marc,

first of all: welcome to the Yamaha forums! :D

Where from did you get that information that there is a DX7 II Plus somewhere out there? Never heard or read about such a model... 8O

If by "Plus" you mean Centennial? It was like two DX7 II in one unit. Very hard to come by, and when you do they're not cheap.

No, its not the Centennial. I read thats a silver finished model. This one looks like just any other DX7II w/floppy disk on side of unit...but at the top, where it says DX7II it also say Plus to the right of the DX711.. So, it reads exactly this: Yamaha DX711 Plus ( it dont say FD, even though it has one!
Never seen anything about it! Thanks for all responses.

Thanks for the welcome! I will try to take a picture of it and post it for anyone to look at it.
I've had a DX711 FD for many years, and I picked this one up at a local music store where some guy traded it in on some P.A. gear. I picked it up because I had never seen one like this before. I will post a picture tonite. Again, thanks for the welcome, and "maybe" someone might have info on this particular model, as I can't find a single thing.

Hi Marc,
Welcome to the Forums! DX7IID Plus came about when Yamaha started adding the Grey Matter Response E! upgrade to the DX7IIFD from the factory. Sales were really booming on that version, Yamaha had a good supply of DX7IIDs on hand and DX7IIFDs were in short supply, so they took a number of the IIDs, added the floppy disk controller and a floppy drive, since they were already stenciled as IIDs, they added the Plus to show that it had a disk drive. The operations of the DX7IID Plus are identical to the DX7IIFD.

Thanks Clyde! I suppose i was overly excited to "see" this particular keyboard with "markings" that I had never seen on a Dx7 before, and I have seen many of them over the last 20 years, and this was the very first I saw that actually had the factory labeling on the front panel as Yamaha DX711 Plus. Thank you for your explanation, as it makes perfect sense, even though I have never seen another one in 20 years.

There were certainly more than a few around, my dealer back in '87/'88 had at least a half dozen of them. I don't think they are listed on Yamaha's own keyboard history/timeline, nor did they ever do a seperate owner's manual for it.

Thanks Clyde;
How can I tell if 'E' was added or not on the Plus version..

As I said in my email to you, the Plus version was simply a substitute to make up for the shortage of IIFDs caused by Yamaha installing E! from the factory. There may have been some IID Plus models with E! in them, but that would be a very rare model, any DX7II that had E! installed at the factory had a large E! logo on the front panel near the DX7II logo. If E! was added aftermarket by a user it might not have had the E! logo, but you would notice things in the menus/lcd screen that should not be there on a standard IID, like Octal mode, sE!quencer, etc.
