String gauge on my new APX?

APX series guitars are designed with a focus on playability. Their thin bodies and cutaways that provide greater access to the upper frets, offer smoother switching between electric and acoustic instruments.

String gauge on my new APX?

Unread post by Rampant » Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:54 pm

Hi folks

So I got myself a beautiful shiney new oriental red sunburst APX700. There's a great story to go with it... I had tried a couple of other guitars and a couple of APX500s. The 500 sounded sweetest of all the small bodied guitars I'd tried so I bought one in old violin sunburst. She was absolutely gorgeous. Alas I spotted a crack down the binding on the side of the neck just above the soundhole, so took it back the next day. Long story short I got a phone call the next day that YAMAHA were offering an APX700 as a straight swap :-0 !!!! The only catch was that it would have to be the one in the shop - and that 1 was oriental red sunburst. Beautiful, but not the colour that I had fallen in love with? Still, it's a more expensive guitar, and is also a beautiful instrument, so I went with that. Its looks have grown on me and the sound is so sweet and potent for a small guitar. Good story, huh?

Back to the point of my post - does anyone know what gauge the standard strings are on the APX700??

Of my 2 local shops, 1 says 10s and the other says 12s.

I think 10s, but I'm quite new at this guitar malarkey, so was hoping for some expert confirmation...

12-52.
I just changed mine for a set of Newtone Masterclass of the same gauge.

Stick with 10's

Hi Rampant,

I've got an APX-6 which is a lot older model than yours but is probably similar structurally. I've heard some horror stories of other people using heavier gauge strings (12's to be exact) and eventually the bridge started lifting creating a bulge on the top and increasing the gap between the strings and the neck making the action almost unplayable.

I've always used 10's, because I'm more of an electric player anyway, but I've never had that happen to me, and I've had the same guitar for about 14 years.

I have tried 12's on occasion but I didn't like the action because bending strings was too difficult, however you do get a little more volume acoustically but then it's an electric anyway, that's what the volume knob is for.

If you do opt to put 12's on I would recommend that you release the tension on the strings when ever you're not playing it.

For what it's worth...I have an American pro country pickin fella on my books. He's been using my apx 4a for his plug in guitar for a few months now. I originally set him up with elixir 11`s, I knew he was fussy. He hated them and went through `every godamed brand of English strings`.......eventually settling on rotosound jk 11`s which are inexpensive, but don't last very long. They get changed every 4 to 6 playing hours, sounding best after an hour or so.

I use RotoSound Jumbo Kings 011 phosphor bronze on my acoustics.

However, I like to use 009's on my electric guitars, so I'll try out 009-048 and 010-50 hoping to keep most of the crisp tones. :)

Rampant - I have the APX500III and went from 12s which came on the guitar, to 11s, and then 10s.

I even tried 9s from DR, called Zebras. Felt just like playing my electric. However, aoustically the sound is very thin. I finally settled on 10s. But just for the heck of it you should try those Zebras !
