I'm hoping to get one of these printed for me soon . . . . (But in BLUE . . . colour is SO important in these situations? )

Check out the video.

I think the positional info generated is amazing . . . . .

Interesting :D

Focus of sound followed the turning camera ........ just like our ears .......
but ... would it not be the same result using two directional microphones ?
Cool gadget though. ((i))

Hi Peter,

Binaural is rather a special case. Sadly, it only REALLY works WELL with headphones - not to say the sound isn't "ok" with speakers, but it is really a headphone system, as this is where the positional detail is at its best.

The main proviso for complete satisfaction - is that you DON'T move your head. If you rotate your head, the entire stereo field rotates with it - which spoils the effect.

IIRC, Sennheiser pioneered the system called "Dummy Head Recording" back in the 70s, and actually produced and sold a "Dummy Head" with mikes built in to achieve this.

The device I mentioned, and hope to have "printed" is merely a minimalist version . . .

Interest in the concept largely died, though I believe Edgar Froece did an album using the technique, and the BBC also did broadcast a "Play without voices" in binaural - which was entirely a sound pastiche with NO recognisable dialog - called "The Revenge" IIRC . . . .

The generally accepted method for recording stereo from a single position is with a crossed-pair of mikes:

crossed-pair.png
crossed-pair.png (7.92 KiB) Viewed 867 times

in this arrangement, the right hand mike is recording the LEFT channel

It IS possible to widen the mike spacing, but care has to be taken to avoid the "hole in the middle" that you tend to get ...

This is usually solved using a Decca-Tree arrangement. Mostly used for orchestras or larger groups of players, it is placed higher up than normal, and in addition to Left and Right Mics, uses a third mike for the centre (to fill the "hole"). More mikes can be used for special purposes as shown here: http://www.mixonline.com/news/profiles/ ... ree/365206

This is the 7" demo that Sennheiser put out in the 70s.

Although it's promoting their "Open Ear" headphones, it is a "Dummy Head" recording. Indeed, the best effect is said to be obtained using Open Ear Headphones.

Here's a pretty good one. (Y)

When using headphones, it's still only two speakers and two ears, but you do get the "feel" of the room.

That was really weird watching on the phone with my in-ear phones. The sound was all behind me, even though it kinda moved in the right direction. Like if my ears were 10 meters behind me!

Oh yeah, and the Novation KS4 is now hooked up again(even though it has to rest vertically when not used)!

Less weird in the studio cans, but IMHO it sounds 'too close' in lack of better words.
I guess the weirdness listening with the in-ear phones comes from the speaker elements actually being much closer to the ear-drum than the ones in the studio cans.

I suspect that I'm expecting more reverb and therefore think it sounds too close... dunno.

Cool stuff regardless! (Y)
