Fender vs Squier - Paul Davids Puts 150$ Chinese Squier against American Custom Shop Fender

Unread postby Saul » Thu Feb 02, 2017 12:24 pm

Another great vid by Paul Davids where he compares his $150 Squier Affinity Strat from 1997 with a Fender Custom Shop Cunetto Relic/John Cruz also from 1997. Both great guitars but is one worth $3350 more than the other? Have a listen and decide for yourselves.

To my ears, not a lot of difference.

He does however describe the fender to have a better feel, finish and it's easier and more pleasant to play.

Same guy comparing acoustic guitars, here the expensive one shines. ((i))
.......... but costing 4850$ more.

Yeah I think if the Squire had the same pickups as the Fender it would be next to impossible to tell the difference just based on sound alone.

With regard to "feel" I reckon there would be a difference but I don't think it over $3000 worth of difference!

I concur . . .

Back in the day, when I played my second (and final) "gig" as Lead Guitar/Vocals, I had the opportunity to borrow my Mate's Sunburst Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, instead of using my £79.95 Vox "Copy".

Ok, I was only playing through a SoundCity 50W Top and a 4 x 12, but I felt at the time, that though the Gibson was Heavier and was defintely "silkier" to play, Soundwise there was not too much in it - and certainly NOT sufficient to justify the HUGE difference in price.

It WAS a treat to play a Real LP though, I can't deny that . . . .

As you mostly know me as "keyboards" in here - I present the evidence ((i)) I'm playing the Gibson LP, My Vox copy standing just behind . .

I think there is always a certain satisfaction in owning the "genuine" article but I often get more satisfaction from owning a guitar some would consider a lesser instrument but that performs...in my opinion of course...just as well. Case in point is the Epiphone EJ200-CE that I bought last year. The original it is based on is the Gibson J200 yet the Gibson costs around £2900 and the Epihone costs around £266! Now yes of course there is a difference but not as much as you might think. In fact some people have been fooled when they were compared side by side...without being able to see the guitars, just going by sound alone. Also the Epiphone has two pickups and two outputs and you can blend the pickups to give a really rich and rounded sound. It is also really well built and for £266 it's an absolute bargain and certainly better value for money than an Gibson.

If you get your hands on a cheap guitar that is well adjusted, it may become a favorite that can't be beat.

Buying an expensive instrument is a passion and obsession, and the extra quality barely justifies the high price.

I know it too well, besides my Yamaha guitars, I own a few Gibsons that I love to bits, but rarely play .... ridiculous really.

Love the photos Chris! You should definitely take up guitar again...it's never too late :)

Maybe next we need a LP vs Copy thread? I think these things are of interest especially to people on a budget because it's always useful to know what good quality but relatively cheap alternatives are out there and also to know what your missing, if anything by not spending the best part of three grand?

Very True. As regards taking it up again - there's the problem of my smashed 4th finger joint on my left hand . . . .

All I CAN say is that I was delighted to be able to buy a fairly convincing copy of the "Black Beauty" for an affordable price - so it would LOOK the part (at a distance at least  ) - so I was doubly delighted that, being a "sample" - it had no NAME on the headstock . . . . (leave them wondering!!).

Even back then, there was no way you were going to get a copy, with "Gibson" written on it (unless you wanted to make your "own arrangements")

It's a bit shabby now and needs an informed "opinion" on it regarding a possible refurb, with an idea of cost / versus replacing it with similar?

Well Django Reinhardt lost the use of two fingers due to a fire but he was one of the finest jazz guitarists of the last century! Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath lost the tips of two fingers in an accident and look where he ended up :) Les Paul had acute arthritis but was still a fantastic player. Open tunings could be the way to go! Sometimes it's the setbacks that move you forward.

Chris, You're a Star. 8)

Thanks for posting the cool pics.

Your Les Paulish black beauty deserves to be played every now and then even though you manly play keys today.
