Yamaha PAC 120H Opinions

Unread postby Mr. Sneaky » Mon Jan 16, 2017 3:58 pm

I have been eyeballing the Yamaha PAC 120H with the natural finish but have not been able to lay my hands on one as of yet. Does anyone have any experience with or currently own one of these models(regardless of color)? I have previously owned the PAC 311H and am curious if the neck has a similar unfinished feel and if the tuners are up to snuff. I realize they are not the Grover locking tuners as on the PAC311H and that they share the same low output alnico V bridge humbucker but am more concerned with the feel of the neck and quality of the tuners. I know Peter owned a version of this for a while and would just send him a "PM"(?) but I am fairly new to the site and actually have no idea how to go about doing such.My apologies for the ignorance. This is the first site I have ever joined and I am not familiar with how to properly navigate my way through all of the methods of communicating.

Hi Scott.

I was very happy with my 120H , for a while ....
The guitar was fine, well built and sounded GREAT, but I never thought it "felt right" for me.

Also, when it comes to design/shape, I tend to avoid "strats", even though I still have a few that I won't part with.

I'd still recommend the 120H for sound and quality, but in your case, I'd try to sort out the tuning issue with your 311H
The small phillips screw at the end of the tuning peg can be tightened (gently) to give the tuner more tension.
This helps the tuner from slipping out of tune.
For some, Grover or Sperzel tuners are the business, and they are VERY good, however,
Yamaha tuners, even on entry level guitars usually works just as fine, so that's no worry to me.

PM or mails are welcome if you need to contact me directly, or if I'm too slow answering, I don't mind, it's fine with me,
but for the sake of sharing experience, we usually take the debates in the forum.

Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

I believe that the majority of the tuning issues were related to the nut. Anyways, I have since sold that guitar to an amateur luthier and replaced it with two pac112J's and a most excellent Joyo AC TONE pedal. I guess I'm just a real sucker for the feel, weight and modding platform of that particular model. I scored both guitars for a total of $225.00 and both are in excellent condition. I took a chance with a company on ebay out of China that provides pretty much any color and pickup configuration of Pacifica pickguards and received the first today. Perfect fit and arrived in 6 days! The cost of approximately $13.00 was to cheap not to take a chance on. It arrived with the back plate and all required hardware. Definitely a win in my book and I am placing more orders immediately. Both of the 112J 's were natural finish so I should be able to build a couple of semi unique (at least amongst my cohorts...haha) fiddles that I hope to hold on to. I also did some research via ebay on Dragonfire pickups and prewired pickguards. Lots to do....I have decided to order a couple of their handwired strat pickups and just swap everything over to the Pacificas and bury the extra tone pot in the control cavity. There are many choices of pickups and every possible configuration. The reviews I have seen are all favorable and you can't beat a delivered cost of $99.00 fully wired with quality pots, 5 way switch and wiring and numerous pickup options to choose from. Should be a simple matter of throwing everything into the new Pacifica pickguard of choice and hooking up the ground and input jack. A good learning experience with little to no soldering involved and a total investment (including guitar) of less than $250.00 per axe. The ebay supplier for the pickguards is named "TNT Guitars". I could spend hours describing all of the available options. Everyone should check out their products and the online reviews. I scored my blank pickguards from another ebay supplier simply called "guitarpartsdistributor". Hope this helps some of folks looking to mod your Pacificas.

Way to go, I you're not happy with a guitar, pass it on.
No need to keep twangers you don't get along with, I don't either.

Looking forward to see your 112 getting pimped up. 8)
