Yamaha YGX121D availability in US?

Unread postby Mr. Sneaky » Thu Jan 12, 2017 4:13 pm

I have been attempting to figure out how a new YGX121D would have managed to end up on the wall of one the local guitar stores in my area (Richmond, Virginia )? I purchased it new in 1996 and until recently never gave it any real thought. That is until I began looking for another one for my son. From what I now "know" these guitars were not made available in the US? I bought it as a "beater", brand new off the shelf for just under $200.00, in hopes that I could keep my six year old's and infant son's grasping little paws off of my more valuable guitars. If they should happen to get ahold of it the potential damage would be a lot easier to digest so to speak. Well, 20+ years later it has managed to survive and is, in all reality, one of the best playing and well intonated guitars I have ever laid my hands on. Not a lot could be said about the sound guality, but for that price and it's purpose, what can you expect? Some time in the past I had removed the big, blocky headstock logo and thrown a Seymour Duncan Distortion (SH-6?)pickup in the bridge. It was really regulated to being the throw around axe that I would grab whenever and was never shown any real "love" and has never been in a case or babied in any way. Due to the playability, intonation and tuning stability it led me to believe another one would be a great prospect for my youngest son's first guitar. I will admit the old beater has grown on me after so many years and I didn't want to see it go missing in action. So the hunt for another began. It quickly became obvious that these are not readily available here in the states. Just curious how this could have made it's way here as a brand new guitar and sold from a local vendor? I have since seen a couple available in Taiwan via ebay, etc. but still not a single one in the US. Any ideas?

These things happen a case in point is the YSG which was made for the Japanese market and not for export. Some however were exported to the UK nobody I know can say for sure whether or not this was accidental. It is possible that similar thing happened with the YGX I believe the last YGXs were made in 1995 so perhaps some leftover unsold ones were sent to the USA.
My youngest son's first guitar was a Pacifica 112 bought about 15 years ago, gigged extensively in a punk band at first and other bands later, certainly not looked after well, but still going strong despite the abuse.

Funny thing .... I didn't know about this guitar, but it looks A LOT like the ERG-121C , a bestseller aimed for the beginners market.

I have owned three ERG-121C, only sold to friends wanting to start guitar at a reasonable price.
The ERG-121 is a great bang for the buck, but if you want a very slim neck for short fingers, the RGX-121 is worth a look as well.

Getting an YGX-121D will be difficult, but not impossible, GO HUNTING :!:

Appreciate the responses. The YGX121D I have has the narrowest neck I have seen. I just took delivery of another pac112j this morning ($125.00 via reverb.com ) it's the 2008 Peter helped me decode (thanks again) and I cant get over the quality and intonation on this instrument! I have steered numerous beginners to these models because I still feel they are the best thing going. This 2008 pac 112j simply crushes my 2016 pac311h. The pick ups are of course a little "weaker" but thats just a 35.00 upgrade from the guys at Guitar Madness. Simply stunned at the quality of this "beginner" guitar. Go Yamaha! I will continue my hunt for anothef YGX121D but with quality this good my son may be playing a 112J or 112V (if I can find the V version).
Peter,
What did you think of the quality of your 120H. I understand that is a newer model? I think I was just a victim of an ebay "B model" regarding my pac311h purchase. I guess that's what I get for rolling the dice on a sight unplayed purchase.

Yamaha PAC-120H . HHN253269 . Taiwan
Guitar Info: Your guitar was made in Taiwan on July 25th, 2011 Production Number: 3269

I think the building quality was up to Yamaha standard, all the noname hardware worked fine, and the sound was great.
I really loved the coil split giving single coil and humbucker sound .... so why was it sold ?
The FEEL and looks of that guitar was just not what I expected, or maybe because I have other guitars that are loved more.

Most of my guitars can give me a reason to keep them, this one just didn't, even though it's a fine twanger.

At least half of my guitars was bought on ebay from Japan , USA , UK and Germany, some of those needed a little TLC, but all are players. :D
Taking a chance is a necessary risk, when you pull the trigger for a gem.

Kicking myself now for missing out on a pristine pac112m that was listed on reverb. I am having problem contacting the seller of a pac120sd that I purchased earlier this week. One of those local pick up only deals. I could have used those funds to grab the 112m. I know. ...day late and a dollar short. I just have been on a bit of a purchasing binge as of late and I am trying to control this recent GAS that has taken me over. (That last bit doesn't sound real good haha I know but you get the gist.....right?) Now you having me looking at the er121's and there are lots of those around...uh oh more GAS.
