GEM S2 display problem

Unread postby radiolite22 » Thu Jun 16, 2016 4:25 am

Hi,

I have gotten a used gem S2 from a frd recently and upon start up, the screen just blink continuously. No light on any of the buttons as well.

I opened it up and found 2 bloated capacitor at the PSU. Got them replaced and same issue... :(

I'm not sure if power supply will be the main culprit. If it us the cause, I may change all the capacitors on it.

As this is the first time I am using this keyboard, does it require any boot up disk in order for it to work? My frd didn't pass any to me... or anywhere I can download and create a startup disk if needed?

Any instructions on the factory reset for the S2? I couldn't find any in the owners manual though..

Hiya.

No, you don't need a boot disk - it will start automatically. Even with a faulty display after about 15 secs the keyboard and buttons should start working. If it's completely unresponsive then it sounds like it's not booting.

A faulty display is quite common on the TURBO models, as there is a ni-cad battery on the TURBO board that has a shelf life of 10 years and then seems to leak battery acid on the LCD controller. This does NOT affect the non TURBO models though as they only have lithium battery.

It's a great keyboard if you can get it working - if you need any measurements of a working unit let me know.

Barry.
