THR-10x - How much gain?

Unread post by xxozixx » Tue Jan 31, 2017 7:40 pm

I recently purchased a thr10x as I play mainly metal. However, although you can get some really great tones out of it, I'm struggling to get a decent old school thrash kinda sound. Maybe I just haven't found it yet but after watching a few more videos on YouTube I'm wondering if I should have gone with the thr10 instead. The 'modern' setting on there seems to get closer to what I'm looking for. Can anybody vouch for this or am I just not using my thr10x right?

Welcome to the Yamaha Forums. :D

Getting metal sounds from the THR-10X should be a no brainer, even THR-10 and THR-10C can produce convincing metal sounds as well.

All THR models can have 100 presets, I recommend to get patches here:  http://guitarpatches.com/patches.php?unit=THR10X

Once you have a fair collection of presets, you have a toolbox of sounds to get you closer to nail the sound you're looking for.

Even though the THR models are "Swiss army knives" of sound, they do have limitations. (all gear does)
Using another guitar, or maybe adding a pedal will change the sound significantly.

Hi Peter. Thanks for the reply.

Spent some more time with the amp and the editor and starting to get some tones that I'm really happy with.
Still wondering though, obviously the thr10 is more versatile but is there enough gain on there to get a decent Metallica tone for example?

No problem, it's gone.

There are 3 Metallica patches available:  http://guitarpatches.com/patches.php?unit=THR10X  (note, there's 2 pages with patches)

Get them (free download), try them, and tweak them, to get as close as possible to the sound you're looking for.

If everything fails, you could get the standard THR-10, but I believe your THR-10X is best suited for the job.

I bought a THR-10 brand new a few years ago, and later a second hand THR-10C.
At the moment, the THR-10C is my favorite for the sounds, I like, but both really SHINE for practice and finding sounds.

Peter
