Distortion pedal in front of THR100H?

Unread post by mcBrain » Fri Apr 14, 2017 10:42 pm

I have a THR100HD in the mail - so If you have heard anything about a new version being presented at Summer Namm, this is the time to let me know :)

I've been a Line6 POD user for many years, but recently decided that I needed fewer options in my life. I just want a simple setup, where I can get good tones without hours of preset tweaking. I'm pretty sure that the THR100 will cover all my needs out of the box except for metal tones. But I'm thinking about getting a good distortion pedal (looking at the Empress Heavy) to put in front of the THR100. However, my experience with distortion pedals in front of SS amps is that it sounds awful, but since Yamaha modelled the amp components instead of the overall sound, I have read that it actually takes pedals in the front really well.

So I would love to know if anyone here have experience with placing overdrive and hi-gain distortion pedals in front of the THR100?

I haven't put my HD500X up for sale yet, since I need good metal tones in my life, but I would love if the THR100 could cover all my tones.

There are quite a few examples of using pedals with THR amps, it sounds like they mix well.

Jeff just got a THR-100HD with the matching THRC-212 cabinet: http://www.yamahaforums.co.uk/forum/vie ... 135&t=9391 ((i))

Here's a good chance to compare experience.

Thanks Peter! I saw the videos berfore ordering the THR100. The only drive pedal I have at the moment is an OKKO Diablo and it sounds great through the amp. It really responds like a real tube amp. Can't wait to get my Empress Heavy next week.

Empress Heavy, that'll get you distortion alright.

The built in gate wil give you some precious SILENCE in between riffs. ((i))

Yup :) And it sounds fantastic in front of the amp! So happy I bought that pedal. With the standard IR's it sounded okay, nothing special, but with Ownhammer Mesa cabient with V60's on the Lead and Modern preamps. WOW! Haven't even turned on my HD500X since I got it. My OKKO Diablo also sounds incredible on the Clean preamp - I just got a Gibson ES-339 last week, so I'm spending a lot of time on that setting at the moment :)

I can also get pretty good distortion tones with the Heavy through the THRC212 cabinet using the Legend1218. The Tonker sounds great for other stuff, but the Legend1218 is by far the most versatile and takes drive/distorion pedals best at low volume.

Thanks! I've been planning to take some pictures for a while. Will post them here as soon as I get around to it.

I only have four guitars at the moment, so not the biggest task :) Will probably do it next week, when I have a few days off from work.

My modest guitar collection consists of the following:

Schecter C1+ (BKP Nailbomb pu's)
Fender Mustang Special (Pawn shop series made in Japan)
Jackson 1992 USA Rhoads (BKP Rebel Yell pu's)
Gibson 2007 CS ES-339

mcBrain,
Thank-You for the feedback, sounds like an awesome setup. It is all welcome as the THR-100's are not available everywhere for people to try out. (I bought mine sight/sound unseen) I'm also looking forward to pictures of the gear.

I never got around to take some good photos of my gear, but since I promised to post some pictures I took some crappy pics with my iPhone. Sorry about the quality.

First the amp:

I'm allergic to nickel, so I'm having all the frets replaced with EVO or Stainless Steel. The Schecter got new EVO frets last summer and the Jackson and Gibson will get new frets in a couple of weeks.
